9 Key Lessons From A Year of Pulp Method Fiction Writing I sat out at the beginning of 2018 to write fiction short stories every week, following the footsteps of Louis L'Amour, Jack London, Mary Roberts Rinehart, Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, and many others. The general consensus was that meeting the target of 50 short stories was the first step. (You can review all these weekly reports and summaries at the "Great Fiction Writing Challenge.") I ended up finding that writing at the million-word-per-year level of Erle Stanley Gardner and H. Bedford-Jones (as well as several other pulp-method writers from the 20's to 50's) is actually easier than it seems. There are some caveats, but not very many. This is my third boil-down of lessons learned - to take it back to a bullet-list and … [Read more...]
The Acid Test of Fiction Writing
For all I've researched and tested in the previous five years about writing and publishing, one challenge yet remained:
Can this be put to use, starting from scratch as a new author, and actually build an audience while writing profitable fiction?
These articles show the journey. Join me. Should be fun.

Fiction Writing: What I Learned From A Year of Self Publishing (With apologies for not linking all the multitude of posts for this past year. But you're weleome to wade through the hundreds I posted - here.) (And you can download this article as PDF) I set out with the purpose of doing a full year writing challenge - to test what I was recommending new and existing writers do. All the advice and recommendations about fiction writing had to be tested. I had over a decade of non-fiction publishing (starting before ebooks became a "thing.") Of course, even with open eyes, things seldom turn out as you expect. The general consensus was that you can make more income from self-publishing fiction than anything else. That turned out to be a big "yes, but..." And mostly showed that … [Read more...]

How I Won NaNoWriMo in Just 21 Days of Fiction Writing It's true - 63594 words of fiction writing in three weeks. (Here's my NaNoWriMo link.) And then on Day 22, I published the final work. And it cost me nothing. Of course, this is unbelievable - and you probably can't do what I did. But some of you can - and this is for those who want some real challenge in their lives. Just put your nay-saying aside for now - because I haven't told you anything you can pick apart yet. (Yes, I can hear it starting up from here... Just view this with an open mind - forget the clickbait headline - and look to see if you can use any of this in your own approach to writing.) Past history 2004 - Won NaNoWriMo, but never published 2010 - Won NaNoWriMo, but never published (even though I'd … [Read more...]
